Quill and book rest in the Great Hall

Join us for a one-of-a-kind opportunity during the “Quills to Quests: Novelists & Authors Open Writing Days” at Hammond Castle Museum, where you’ll be transported to a world of inspiration and creativity.

Whether you’re working on a novel, crafting poetry, or simply seeking a serene space for your thoughts to flow, the castle will surely inspire you!

In fact, the castle has served as a muse since our founder John Hays Hammond Jr, and his wife, Irene Fenton Hammond (nom de plume: Madame Renee Longquille) lived within these stone walls and penned their own works all those many years ago. We proudly continue that tradition and acknowledge National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) by offering you the perfect setting to fuel your own writing ambitions. Hammond Castle Museum offers a unique, fantastical, and enchanting setting that will help you find your voice and set it to paper.

This November, unbind your inner novelist, inspire your passion, and be motivated to craft words that will leave a lasting mark. Reserve your spot, your muse awaits within these grand walls!

Each reservation is only $30 and provides quiet access to many of the rooms within including the Great Hall from noon to 8 pm. Table, chairs, and extension cords will be provided for use in the Great Hall and Side Chapel. Writers are encouraged to explore the rest of the Museum but these rooms will not be formally set to accommodate writers. We encourage you to bring a small, foldable chair or small mat on which to sit if you will wish to spend time writing in any of the other open rooms within. Please note: WiFi and access to electrical outlets are not available in most areas within the Museum. Please plan accordingly.

Light snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase within the Museum Shop. Attendees are invited to bring a meal and store it in the Museum’s refrigeration. Refrigerated foods must be clearly labeled with your name. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Writings days are:

  • Wednesday, November 8
  • Monday, November 13
  • Tuesday November 14
  • Tuesday, November 21

About CALYX Press Founded in 1976, CALYX Press publishes CALYX:  A Journal of Art and Writing by Women.   CALYX exists to nurture creativity by publishing fine literature and art by women and nonbinary creators. While CALYX has long existed to provide a platform for women’s work, it is an intersectional platform that serves to spotlight the voices of underrepresented communities in the literary world. We are dedicated to keeping that space open to cisgender women, transgender women, and nonbinary and genderfluid authors. CALYX is committed to:
  • introducing a wide audience to high quality literature and art by women and nonbinary creators
  • providing a forum for diversity and underrepresented writers and viewpoints
  • discovering and publishing emerging and developing writers
  • preserving publications for future audiences
CALYX Journal is known for discovering important writers.  Julia Alvarez, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Paula Gunn Allen, Olga Broumas, Natalie Goldberg, Barbara Kingsolver, Ellen Bass, Molly Gloss, Ursula K. LeGuin and Sharon Olds were among the more than 4,000 writers published during our first 40 years. CALYX was the first to publish the artwork of Frida Kahlo in color in the U.S., and in 1980 CALYX also featured work by the Nobel Laureate poet Wislawa Szymborska–the first English translations of her work published in the U.S. Now the longest running women’s literary journal in the United States, CALYX is the recipient of the Oregon Governor’s Arts Award, the Stanley H. Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts, Pushcart Prizes, and American Literary Magazine Awards, and multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, among others.  CALYX, Inc., is a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)3 status.  We are currently staffed exclusively by volunteers and interns.  Our work is sustained by subscriptions, donations, and grant and fellowship funding.
