Embark on a journey through television’s rich history in our new temporary exhibit, “Hammond and the History of Television.” This exhibit delves into the pioneering contributions of John Hays Hammond Jr. and other key figures, shedding light on the evolution of television technology from its theoretical beginnings to its digital transformation. Explore the role of the Hammond Radio Research Laboratory and RCA in shaping the landscape of television, and gain insights into the STEAM principles of Science & Engineering behind various transmission and reception methods.

Immerse yourself in the evolution of television technology with functional displays showcasing a mechanical television system, CRT television, LCD display, and autostereoscopic 3D display. Explore  a mosaic of television pioneers and a visual representation of the TV “family tree.” Gain insights into technical diagrams of television systems and learn about Hammond’s groundbreaking work through models of his “Telespot” system and cathode ray tube assembly. Dive deeper with interactive digital panels presenting a timeline of television milestones, a gallery of Hammond’s television innovations, and educational videos on television mechanics. Plus, take a behind-the-scenes look into the exhibit development through a mini-documentary.

Then, be sure to visit the Museum Shop on your way out to purchase your own copy of Hammond Castle Museum Presents 140 Years of Television: A History of a Transformative Technology by our Curatorial Director John Leysath. This full-length nonfiction book is a perfect supplement to the exhibit.
