Portrait of Eric Pape-by Barnett McFee Clinedinst

Join us for a very special exhibit of works by American artist and former Cape Ann resident, Eric Pape (1870 -1938). Pape is perhaps most widely known throughout the Cape Ann community for his 1907 design of the Tablet Rock Memorial in Stage Fort Park commemorating the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1623.

The Eric Pape At Hammond Castle Museum exhibit will consist of more than two dozen works by Pape, many of which have not been seen publicly in nearly a century.  At the time of the exhibit, it is expected to be the largest collection of Pape’s artworks on public display anywhere in the world.  The catalog of artwork is primarily on loan from the private collection of Dr. Gregory Conn, one of the world’s leading Pape experts and biographer.  On display in the museum’s Great Hall will be examples of Pape’s work in various mediums including pencil, pen, watercolors, and oils. The catalog features the recently restored “The Wireless Naval Battle of Gloucester Bay,” the only surviving mural by the famed artist. The mural, which is on permanent display in the War Room exhibit room, was generously restored by Dr. Conn and his wife, Dr. Sagrario Ortega. The project was completed during the 2020 season, while the museum was closed to the public during Coronavirus shutdowns.

A limited-edition, hard cover, companion guide to the exhibit written by Dr. Conn will discuss each of the featured artworks in detail, explore the close relationship between Pape and the entire Hammond family,  as well as include Pape’s biography and feature the restoration of the mural at Hammond Castle Museum. The book, “Eric Pape at Hammond Castle Museum” will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop. The exhibit will also include a short documentary on Pape’s life which will play on loop during the exhibit.

Eric Pape at Hammond Castle Museum will run from Saturday, April 15th through Sunday, April 30th and will welcome guests from 10am to 3pm daily with the exhibit closing at 4pm. On weekdays, exhibit tickets for adults are $10 and on Saturdays and Sundays, tickets are $20 as guests may also enjoy self-guided tours of the museum. Children ages 12 and under are welcome for free but require a ticket.
