History of Medieval Arms and Armor: The Knight

April 21, 2021

Knights, swords, and medieval castles, oh my!

Kids can explore the role of arms and armor in the life of the medieval knight at an actual castle!

This April vacation middle schoolers can join Hammond Castle Museum for a fun and educational program on the History of Medieval Arms and Armor.  Hosted by our enthusiastic experts-in-residence Scott Cordiner, former Museum curator, and John Leysath, curatorial director, adventurous kids can learn about how arms and armor were used and see real-life examples. On display will be a number of helmets from the medieval to the Renaissance periods, as well as many other pieces that would typically have been used in that timeframe. This presentation will answer questions about the weight of armor, its durability, and why medieval knights had at least three different types of armor: for battle, for the tournament, and for festivals and parades.  We will explore how knights identified friend from foe and how family histories were determined by what they used as weaponry. At the conclusion of the program there will be a question and answer session.  Test their newfound knowledge on the ride home; just no sword play!

This program will be offered in two sessions: 11 am and 1 pm. Available seats are limited and advance ticket purchase is required. This program is a fundraiser to support ongoing restorations to our nearly 100 year old museum. Adults are $20, Children are $10.  It is not necessary to reserve a ticket for little children ages four and under as long as they remain on a parent or guardian’s lap.   In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have developed a Code of Safety in an effort to maintain the health and wellness of all our guests and staff while offering a safer, enjoyable experience. Before purchasing your tickets, please view our policy.
